The Catalan name for the Island is Eivissa but the name in Spanish is Ibiza. The Islands reported history was born when Phoenician settlers founded a port on the Island. But it was the Greeks who were the first to call the Islands the Pityussai or Pine covered Islands. Today Ibiza is one of the two Pine Islands. After the Assyrians defeated the Phoenicians the latters power declined on the Island and this gave Carthage the opportunity to take control of Ibiza. At this time the Island produced salt, dye, fish sauce and wool. The Phoenician lunar goddess Tanit has a shrine in the cave at Es Culleram. Ibiza then became the major trading post of the Balearic islands.
The Roman Empire saw Ibiza became a quiet Imperial outpost and had lost its importance as a port in the mid-Meditteranean. Brief periods of both Vandal and later Byzantine rule gave way to the Moors who conquered the Island and much of the Iberian peninsula. Under Islamic rule the Island became again an important trading point to the Moorish Spain mainland. Not until 1235 did James I of Aragon reclame the Island for Christendom. The Island has been part of a democratic Balearic Autonomous community since the 1970’s.
Ibizas climate is particularly Meditteranean and average temperature in July and August are near 30 degrees celsius. The winters are relatively mild with temperatures around 15 degrees C.
Nightlife has made the Island famous. Ibiza town and San Antoni are the two epicentres for nightlife, and what a lot of people seek Ibiza package deals for. Privilege which is the world’s largest nightclub with a capacity of 10,000. The main room has a swimming pool and has a 25 metre high roof. The Guiness Book of Records officially recognise it as being the largest club in the world. The building is famous for Freddie Mercury filming his video ‘Barcelona’ in it in 1987 with Montserrat Cabelle.
Some of the Island has UNESCO world heritage site status. A curiosity at San Antoni de Portmany is ‘The Egg’ sculpture. The statue was erected in the early 1990’s to commemorate a local claim that Christopher Columbus was born in the area. The sculpture is egg shaped and inside is a model of the ship The Santa Maria. The town also has another attraction in Passeig des Fonts. A harbourside promenade that includes Palm trees and rubber plants.
